Most people have moved before, but rarely in Boston. Narrow one-way streets, permit windows, triple-decker staircases and buildings that release the freight elevator for two hours on a Tuesday — that is what shapes the day here, far more than how many rooms you are moving.
Here is how a move actually runs, hour by hour, and what makes the difference between a six-hour day and a ten-hour one.
Two days before: permits and elevators
Parking is the single biggest variable in a Boston move. A permit reserves the space directly outside your door, and the signs have to go up at least 48 hours in advance — the city does not make exceptions for a truck that showed up hopeful.
We handle the paperwork for you, but there are a few things only you can arrange:
- Book the freight elevator with your building, and get the reserved window in writing.
- Tell the building manager the crew’s arrival time and how long we expect to be there.
- Set aside anything you are moving yourself, so it is not competing for space on the truck.
- Empty and defrost the fridge the night before — it cannot travel with water in it.
If you are moving on September 1st, treat every one of these as a hard deadline. That day the entire city moves at once, and there is no slack anywhere in the system.
Move day, 8:00 — the walkthrough
The crew arrives inside the scheduled window and walks the place with you before touching anything. We agree on what goes, what stays, and what needs special handling — the glass tabletop, the grandfather clock, the box marked do not load.
Then the protection goes down: floor runners along the path, padding on door frames, blankets on bannisters. This takes fifteen minutes and saves far more than that in careful squeezing later.

What we cannot take
Some items are not ours to move, and it is better to know before the truck is loaded:
- Propane tanks, gasoline and lighter fluid
- Paint, solvents and other flammable liquids
- Ammunition and fireworks
- Anything perishable that will not survive the trip
Move day, 9:00 to 13:00 — loading
Loading is where experience shows. Heavy, rigid pieces go in first and low; fragile items ride high and tight; everything is strapped before the truck moves an inch. A crew that packs the truck properly will unload faster at the other end, which is the part you are paying for by the hour.
The single most common cause of an overrunning move is not the volume of stuff. It is a blocked loading spot and a crew carrying boxes an extra hundred feet to the truck.
If your street is tight — most of Allston, the North End, half of Beacon Hill — that permit you posted two days ago is the reason the day stays on schedule.
Move day, 14:00 — unloading and placement
At the new place we walk the rooms with you first, then unload to plan. Boxes go to the room named on the label, furniture is reassembled where you want it standing, and the beds go together before anything else, so the day can end whenever you need it to.
The final walkthrough
Before we leave we go through every room, the truck and the old place together. Nothing missed, nothing left behind, nothing damaged and unmentioned. If something did go wrong, you hear it from us first — and you can file a claim the same day, with photos, and we will come back to you within one to two business days.
A realistic timeline
For a two-bedroom apartment with reserved parking at both ends, plan on six to eight hours door to door. Add two hours if there is no elevator at one end, and another two if parking is a block away.
